In Hawaii, well, we always had kimchi, so when I was in Korea, there was a lot of kimchi, so that was my meal, kimchi and rice. Your experience in the war and after.<\/p>\n<p>[ Chatter ]<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; In the beginning, I saw a lot of casualties, and as a young boy, I never seen this in my life, and so I couldn&#8217;t eat for 11 days. I was so upset. And after that, I started to eat, understand I got to eat. Otherwise, I&#8217;d die. But I learned a lot about the Koreans. They were very nice people. Everywhere we went, they were taking care of every soldier, and otherwise, that&#8217;s about all [INAUDIBLE].<\/p>\n<p>[ Chatter ]<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; You can talk about anything you want.<\/p>\n<p>[ Chatter ]<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Whenever you&#8217;re ready.<\/p>\n<p>[ Chatter ]<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Well, one of the things that we were there, we didn&#8217;t have supplies, so I never changed clothes for 3 months. That&#8217;s how bad. There was no supplies, no clothing.<\/p>\n<p>[ Chatter ]<\/p>\n<p>My clothes was just like leather. Most of us, every time we went to take a shower, everything was frozen, and so we couldn&#8217;t take showers but &#8230; And we used to burn houses to keep warm because you had no facilities, and so as we advanced, we&#8217;d stand under a house with a cigarette lighter, keep warm. That was it, but we had no winter clothing. By the time April came, 52 of the supplies came. It was too late, but that was because of the war started, and then America wasn&#8217;t in any war at that time so unprepared for it, the Korean War.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; You know Hawaii didn&#8217;t become a state officially until 1959?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; And you were sent to Korea in 1950. I don&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n<p>[ Chatter ]<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yeah, well, we were a territory of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; I know, so did you volunteer, or were you drafted?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; I volunteered in the Army.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Why would you want to volunteer for? Technically it wasn&#8217;t even your country.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Well, I volunteered in 1948. There was no jobs. Well, most of us all &#8230; After you got out of high school &#8230; Because of the second war, my parents went broke. We lost everything due to the Second World War so couldn&#8217;t go to college, so after I graduated from high school, joined the Army. Most of us all did. We joined the Army to get income, I guess, because at that time, there weren&#8217;t many jobs around.<\/p>\n<p>[ Chatter ]<\/p>\n<p>But that was one of the reasons why. In the Korean War, I was a sergeant in the First Battalion, the Welsh regiment. I joined the battalion in January, 1952 on a feature called the Shimyeondong Valley, and the feature in front was known as Hill 169. My date of birth was the 4th of the 2nd, 1929. Having been on a 12-hour patrol, up to my eyes in snow, I came back with the patrol, and this young officer put a tumbler of rum in my hand, and he said to me, \"The King is dead. Long live the Queen.\" That was 2 days after my 23rd birthday, the 6th of February, 1952. Her Majesty, the Queen, came to the throne. I served in Korea right up until we left, which was in November 1952. By that time, the Korean War had become, as we were all concerned became static lines just like it was in the 1914, '15. The attacking forward up to the Yellow River led by General MacArthur had stopped and seized, and took over from the First Battalion. We lost a regiment, which was really wiped out. Now one of the things they handed over to us, like we took Korea, we took our regiment [INAUDIBLE]. They handed over to us a rabbit called Harvey. Do you remember the film, \"Harvey,\" and the drunkard, played by Henry Fonda, I believe, or somebody or James Stewart. I can't remember. Anyway, we carried on patrolling the no-man's-land in between the North and the South, and this would continue for a number of months, and at one time, our B company did an attack on a hill called Hill 270, and this was fought on this hill feature called 355. Unfortunately, a lot of our boys were wounded and one or two killed. In fact, if you look at our title of our book of the Welsh Regiment, it lists 32. We lost 32 men killed in Korea and quite a number wounded. Now this book was compiled by the intelligence officer we had in Korea, a Lieutenant Norman Summon, who finally retired as Major Norman Summon, and he and the curator for the museum compiled the history of the Welsh Regiment in Korea in the Korean War. I should say, when I did arrive in Korea, I arrived after the battalion, and I landed at Busan in the south. Busan, in those days was a shanty-type of a city, [INAUDIBLE] city which had been devastated by war, and we were greeted by an American band that played us on ashore, and we then entrained right up to Seoul, and I think ... I can't quite remember. It was either Uijeongbu or Kumjongti, something like that, that we disembarked, and in fact at the end of the Korean War ... end of our joint in Korea, we handed over to the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, and again, we entrained at the same place in one of those two railway stations, and we embarked for Busan, where we got on the troop ship. Before we embarked the regiment went to the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, which is situated in Busan, and we held a service there to commemorate all those boys that we lost and were wounded or suffered whilst in the Korea. Whilst I was up in the line at one time, I was sent back to Seoul to carry out a ceremonial duty on a general that visited. His house man, the man that run his estate in Seoul, took us on tours of Korea ... Of Seoul, I should say, and we could see the devastation that was caused by when the North came down and, as you know, attacked the South, but in conclusion, I must say that the people of Korea have pulled themselves out of nothing and one of the leading people in this world today. Where we be? We'd be without out televisions and radios and so on. I thank the people of Korea, and I always enjoy the people, and in fact, I got this photo of platoon in Korea. That's a photo of my platoon, and on there are the house boys that looked after me or looked after us, I should say. They were apart of the Korean Service Corp. They came up first thing in the morning to make sure we were all right, help us with our chores, getting washed, getting dressed. We even shaved in the front line. If we didn't have water. We melted the snow, but those boys were very useful, and as I said earlier, we used to have a ration of 50 cigarettes in those days which I give to the house boy to thank him because not only did he keep an eye on me, he took my dirty washing down the hill to bring back a few days later. Now that is him. When we were out on the line, this is the picture that was taken of the sergeant's best that was in Korea. I'm on there as a very young 23-year-old, but will no conclude and say I was very, very proud for having served in Korea, and it noticed, other my first medal, my first two ribbons are the British Korean and the United Nations medal. I would now like to conclude this interview. Grandpa Sua was in the Air Force, which is very rare, in 1950 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Two.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; 1952, so he flew to Korea carrying a &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Atomic bomb.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; He carried an atomic bomb, but thank God, yeah, thank God he didn&#8217;t have to drop it, right? Yeah. If I remember correctly, General MacArthur kind of wanted to drop it, huh?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Wanted to drop it.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yeah, but thank God that didn&#8217;t happen because Korea then would not exist today, maybe. Yes, and maybe I wouldn&#8217;t exist, so thank you for not dropping it.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; [INAUDIBLE] protect Korea.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes. Thank you. Thank you. Look how young he looks. He has an impeccable memory, and he was a combat veteran, right?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; He served in some of the major battles of &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Outpost Harry.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Outpost Harry with the Greeks.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Pork Chop Hill.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Pork Chop Hill. Oh, by the way, everybody, do you have the &#8230; Well, he doesn&#8217;t have it, but he&#8217;s part of the Indianhead, the second ID. There&#8217;s a lot of Indianhead people watching this. So, &#8220;second to none,&#8221; right?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Second to none.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Second to none. Yes, yes. What does it mean for you to have a father who served in the Korean War?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; I&#8217;m very proud of my dad. He inspired me to join the service as well, and so I&#8217;m very proud of him.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Where did you serve?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; First Persian Gulf War.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Oh, thank you for your service too. Thank you. Okay. Well, he&#8217;s not a Koren War veteran.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Nope.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; As you can see, he&#8217;s not that old, but his father &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; His father was a Korean War veteran, and your father&#8217;s name is &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Edwin Robert Hollister.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes. Mr. Grandpa Edwin, he too also served in Desert Storm, so we have many families. Many of the members of the family served in the military and American Samoa. Per capita, right, number one, per capita, number one, and they have the spirit of serving the country, duty freedom, right, family, protecting family.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; And so your father served what year, you said?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; 1950 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; 19 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; &#8230; until 1953, somewhere that time.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yeah, yes, and he served in the Army.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Army, yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes. Do you know what division or what &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; No. I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes. He doesn&#8217;t know, but he did say that his father was very proud, right?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; He died 7 years ago?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; No, back in &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Oh, it was &#8217;75, 1975.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; &#8217;76. He passed away in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Oh, 1976, but he was born in 1925.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Oh, and he was a medic. Now it&#8217;s coming back to me.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; He was a medic, yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes, he was a medic. He was a medic, so we have airmen. We have a combat veteran, and we have a medic in American Samoa in the Korean War. And this is a very special story, so I&#8217;m going to save you last.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Mm-hmm.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Ladies, best for last, but his father &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Uncle.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Uncle, I&#8217;m sorry. His uncle also served in the Korean War, and so did he, right?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; And your uncle inspired you to be tough, right? You said so.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yeah. Everybody was scared of his uncle and his family, he said, right?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; And what is your uncle&#8217;s name?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Name is Titae Fieme.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes, and we honor him and his memory. Now her uncle and her brave uncle also fought. So they&#8217;re all family here. Let&#8217;s show &#8230; What&#8217;s your name? What&#8217;s your name? She&#8217;s shy, but she&#8217;s very cute and pretty. Okay, so your uncle&#8217;s name is &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Masanisa Soripo Fanlan.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes, and her uncle, however, passed away, died, was killed in the Korean War.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Action.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Killed in action in August &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; August 12th, 1950.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes, so as you remember, that was less than 2 months after the Korean War broke, and this was before the [INAUDIBLE] of MacArthur, so when your uncle fought was when the North Korean army, after invading the 38th Parallel, kept pushing down and down and down and down. So your uncle was part of the first major casualties that were suffered, and it was so touching because her family still remembers her uncle&#8217;s memory, but she never saw his picture. They don&#8217;t have a picture of their uncle, so they don&#8217;t know how he looks like, so they only remember him through the heart, and so I&#8217;m really hoping that I can find them &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; A picture.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yeah, get a picture so that they can see how handsome their uncle was, and I know your other sister is not here, but there was a song about his uncle. Can you sing that a little bit one more time?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; I don&#8217;t know. I forgot the words.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Yes.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; My sister remembers.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; Just a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt; The word of the song, it was done by my grandmother, his mom, and the word of the song goes like this in English: &#8220;Masani, where are you? But he is the one who thought of building this memorial, and this entire town supported it, got behind and actually made it into a reality. So please, what inspired you??\n\n>> What inspired me was forgotten generation [INAUDIBLE] Korean War [INAUDIBLE] so many other wars. It was something that needed to be done at that time, and with the support of [INAUDIBLE] Council, our own committee, there was a lot of people involved [INAUDIBLE]. And we are proud [INAUDIBLE]. And so many people, such as yourself, come here who are proud of it, too. It's a tourist attraction. Me siento orgulloso de haber pertenecido a ese ej\u00e9rcito libertador en su pa\u00eds, a ese grupo que fuimos a luchar por la libertad, por la democracia de Corea, de un pueblo oprimido en aquella ocasi\u00f3n. Yo permanec\u00ed 15 meses en Corea. Mi comandante fue, con mi, en esa \u00e9poca, coronel Ruiz Novoa, quien falleci\u00f3 en d\u00edas pasados, hoy general de la Rep\u00fablica. Mi experiencia all\u00ed en Corea fue bastante dif\u00edcil porque, por el idioma, por las costumbres. Para m\u00ed era un pa\u00eds desconocido, gente desconocida, pero gente amable, gente muy querida por la cual luchamos hasta donde fue posible. De mi regreso a Colombia tengo la experiencia de haber sido recibido aqu\u00ed, en mi pa\u00eds, con honores. Despu\u00e9s, form\u00e9 una familia. Tengo ocho hijos, todos profesionales, un militar, el menor de mi familia, de mis hijos, coronel de la Fuerza A\u00e9rea Colombiana. Hemos recibido en la Embajada de Corea, he recibido muchas atenciones, muchos agasajos, beneficios para mis, para mis nietos en cuanto a educaci\u00f3n. Y he encontrado mucho apoyo en todos los casos en los cuales hemos tenido que ver mucho con la colonia de Corea. Cualquier pregunta que quiera hacerme, con mucho gusto.<br \/>\n&#8211; \u00bfQu\u00e9 piensa de que, de Corea y coreanos y el futuro de Corea? Fui muy bien atendido, muy bien recibido. Nos recibieron, fui en compa\u00f1\u00eda de cuatro compa\u00f1eros m\u00e1s. Fuimos recibidos como h\u00e9roes. Nos atendieron muy bien. Corea, especialmente Se\u00fal, ha cambiado much\u00edsimo de la \u00e9poca en que estuvimos en la guerra a como se encuentra ahora. Corea se ha desarrollado much\u00edsimo, ha progresado, y me alegra much\u00edsimo que Corea en este momento sea uno de las potencias econ\u00f3micas del mundo, y que su gente maravillosa todav\u00eda nos recuerda despu\u00e9s de m\u00e1s de 60 a\u00f1os, nos recuerda con cari\u00f1o y con gratitud.
