Korean War Memorials - 31-2 Pajang-dong

South Korea – France – Suwon

This memorial in Suwon honors the efforts of the French military during the war. The French Republic participated in the war from September 1950 until July 1953, sending in the French Battalion of the United Nations Organization (ONU). The battalion fought with the 23rd U.S. Regiment and played an important role in establishing bases for counterattack in the Battle of Wonju, Battle of Twin Tunnels, and Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. The French Battalion left Korea with many honors, including five French Citations to the Order of the Army, two Korean Presidential Citations, and three American Distinguished Unit Citations.

In total, there were 287 soldiers killed, 1350 wounded, 12 prisoners of war, and seven missing in action. The monument displays the pictures of the French Battalion in action and a huge wall with the names of all 287 French soldiers who were killed during the war.
