The memorial in Jeju Island in South Korea is dedicated to Colonel Dean E. Hess, “Hero of the Korean War hero, Godfather of the ROK Airforce, and Father of Korean War Orphans.”

Reverend Hess joined the US Air Force in WWII and became a colonel during the Korean War. He not only flew more than 250 missions but also trained South Korean pilots. He had a heart for orphaned kids and organized Operation Kiddy Car, which saw the transportation of 1,000 children to Jeju Island. To his dismay, 300 children died from disease, malnutrition and other maladies. Until his dying day in 2015, he regretted he couldn’t save their lives.

The memorial was recently built on March 9, 2017 to honor this great man.
